System failures

In the Failures menu (accessible via the New Flight menu) you can activate different system failures:

Guidance and HUD

These switches will simply turn off the guidance (the diamond symbol in the HUD) or the entire head-up-display respectively.

Hydraulics failure

This switch will shut down two of the three auxiliary power units (APUs), which results in degraded performance of the hydraulics systems and thus causes the control surfaces to move more slowly. Keep your gain low, as this makes the Orbiter's susceptibility for pilot induced oscillations a lot worse.

Stuck speedbrake

The rudder/speedbrake will be stuck at the configured angle. Here's the procedure, depending on the spedbrake setting:

0% to 40%
  • Deploy gear at Mach 0.95.
  • In the HAC, fly the needles.
  • Aim for the close in aimpoint, use pitch to keep airspeed below 321 KEAS.
40% to 50%
  • In the HAC, fly the needles.
  • Deploy gear at 300 KEAS.
  • Aim for the close in aimpoint, use pitch to keep airspeed below 321 KEAS.
50% to 70%
  • In the HAC, fly the needles.
  • Aim for the close in aimpoint, use pitch to keep airspeed below 321 KEAS.
  • Nominal gear deploy (i.e. at 300 ft).
70% to 100%
  • In the HAC, fly about 5,000 ft high.
  • Aim 3000 feet before the runway threshold (approx. halfway between the threshold and the close in aimpoint). Glideslope angle should about 25° - keep airspeed below 321 KEAS.
  • Nominal gear deploy (i.e. at 300 ft).
